I bought this one as my first uke after reading (and hearing!) many good things about the Lanikai brand. I didn’t want to go for one of those cheapo starter packs over on Amazon or ebay, I wanted a uke with some pedigree. As a former bassist, I know the better the instrument you start with, the better your chances are of actually learning to play with as little frustration as possible.

The Mahogany MA-C is all that and more. It has a pleasant sound with lots of sustain, those Nubone parts are doing their thing for sure. The tuners do their thing well enough as well and I actually found myself even liking the EJ88 strings over all of the other Aquila equipped ukes that I tried out in person, they sound quite “twangy” and have minimal stretch to them as opposed to the Aquila’s that my friends use, they seem very impressed with them as well. I haven’t worn out a set yet to tell how long they’ll last, but so far so good.

As for the uke itself, the build quality is very high, no imperfections were found on my example, and the looks are a match for the pics on here save for them adding some circular inlays/printing around the sound hole, a nice addition in my book. All told, I’d recommend the MA-C to anyone with larger fingers who wants to play a real, well designed and put together uke instead of using poorly designed or hastily put together (for maximum profit over quality) ukes found elsewhere….you really do get what you pay for here. Well done Lanikai!
